Did you know?

Eventhough we are studying 3 specific systems (muscular, skeletal and nervous) we think it could be useful for you to watch the following videos so you can understand better how our bodies work:

Top 10 Facts You Didn’t Know About Your Body

How does your digestive system works?

How does the food you eat affect your brain?

What would happen if you didn't drink water?

Muscular System

These videos will help you to reinforce what you know and what you have learnt about the Muscular System during this unit. We hope you enjoy them:

Positive/healthy lifestyle choices: Long Term Positive Effects

Keeping healthy means doing things that are good for your body. Things like eating nutritious foods, exercising, brushing your teeth and getting enough sleep.

It’s important to understand how what you eat and what you do affects your body. A balanced diet means that your body is getting all the nutrients it needs. Brushing your teeth at least twice a day prevents you from getting cavities. Exercising for around 30-60 minutes each day means that you’ll stay fit and burn the right amount of calories.

Visit the following link to read about tips to have a healthy lifestyle. Then tell us about good choices you do at home as a family to keep a healthy lifestyle. Thanks!

How do neurons work?

(Click on the orange words to get access to extra information about each topic!)

A neuron (also known as a neurone or nerve cell) is a cell that carries electrical impulses. Neurons are the basic units of the nervous system and its most important part is the brain.
Every neuron is made of a cell body (also called a soma), dendrites and an axon. Dendrites and axons are nerve fibres. There are about 100 billion neurons in the human brain.

Neurons are connected to one another and tissues. They do not touch and instead form tiny gaps called synapses. These gaps can be chemical synapses or electrical synapses and pass the signal from one neuron to the next.

To sum up, neurons carry electrical messages from one part of your body to another. These messages contain information about what's happening and help you respond in the right way.

Interdependence between systems

Resultado de imagen para interdependent body systems

The human body contains trillions of cells, 78 different organs and more than 60,000 miles of blood vessels if you stretched them end-to-end. Incredibly, all of these cells, vessels and organs work together to keep you alive.

Each organ belongs to one of ten body systems. These body systems are interconnected and dependent upon one another to function. Your heart does not beat unless your brain and nervous system tell it to do so. Your skeletal system relies on the nutrients it gains from your digestive system to build strong, healthy bones.

Interdependence means that all of the body systems need all of the other systems. They rely on each other for many different things and cannot function without the other. For example, the nervous and endocrine systems control the activities of the digestive, excretory, circulatory and respiratory systems.

Additionally, we need our respiratory system to take in oxygen, we need our circulatory system to deliver the oxygen to the muscles and we need the digestive system to break the food down into nutrients like glucose to be turned into energy.

We invite you to visit the following links where you can find information about ALL, yes! ALL BODY SYSTEMS !!!!!

Healthy Choices

Do you think you have a healthy lifestyle?

Is physical activity (jogging, going to a gym, swimming pool)
an important part of a healthy lifestyle?

Is there any connection between the person's style of life and
the duration of his/her life?

Lifestyle Choices

During this week, we will be starting our new unit of inquiry which is part of the ransdiciplinary theme Who we are.

Central Idea:
Lifestyle decisions affect how body systems work, impacting health and survival.

Imagen relacionadaThe lines of Inquiry are:
  • The body is made up of several systems that are interdependent.
  • Forces make objects and bodies move.
  • Lifestyle choices affect  the body (alcohol, drugs, sedentary lifestyle, exercise).
